DJ Torres back here for fireside chats with kin•dom and Zephyr Point, we are overlooking, as I have said every time, and I'll say every time, beautiful Lake Tahoe, we're glancing over our shoulders and seeing the lake on a perfectly sunny, beautiful day today. And I have another camper, camper, introduce yourself, please.

speaker 1  1:14

Hi, I'm Goose.

DJ  1:15

Hi, Goose.

speaker 1  1:16

I've been here for three years, and I think I've been-my first year was the first year here at Zephyr-or yeah!

DJ  1:23

I think that's right.

speaker 1  1:24

But I've loved camp so far. I've made my first two friends, first year, and I've been like hanging out with them, the like the entire time we come here.

DJ  1:33

So, let's talk about that. So, you're you're a year three member here, which is so cool. How many other three-year returners are there?

speaker 1  1:42

I think there is Latte, and then there's one or two other people, but I know there are a lot of people who have returned from last year.

DJ  1:55

Yeah.

DJ  1:55

That's yeah, about half of you all, I think, are returners from last year. So, okay, since you have such history way more than I do. I've only been here for two years. I would love to hear about, like, what was that first year like? And then what was it like coming back last year? And then as the third year returner, like what are you learning? Just like, kind of walk us through your many years of experience.

speaker 1  2:17

The first year was really fun. Think generally the two, like the activities we did, were the same for the first two years. We went, it was pretty experimental since it was the first year at kin•dom, or kin•dom was here at Zephyr, and we, we mainly stayed around here, so we, the only time we went off campus was to, we walked a small hike around Spinner Lake, and then we went around. There's one other thing we did that was off campus, but I like the activities a lot this year, because we didn't-we got to do rock climbing, and we got to do...oh my gosh, when we went kayaking-we got-we went further than we did last two years.

DJ  3:06

Oh, cool.

speaker 1  3:07

And I'm really excited for the murder mystery night tonight.

DJ  3:12

Yeah, why don't you tell us about that? What is-what do you know of the murder mystery night? And also, do you plan to dress up?

speaker 1  3:18

I do not know anything about the murder mystery? I think it might be like Clue?

DJ  3:22

Yeah?

speaker 1  3:23

But I do-I-the thing I have to dress up is actually pretty lucky because we were sent like a different list at first, and I-they resent it immediately after, but I just didn't see it, so I packed for the wrong like events, but the I'm wearing a like navy, it's like a, it's like peacock blue, nice, like a pantsuit, and I'm like, oh, it could be Miss Peacock, I'm gonna do my makeup as the-

DJ  3:47

Perfect.

speaker 1  3:49

Like, oh, what a coincidence!

DJ  3:54

That's great. So you're saying just to go back a little bit, you were talking about how year one, and maybe even a little bit of year two, was like maybe you didn't go into the mountains as much, maybe you, you said you went onto the water a little further than you've been in years past. I mean, is that like, say more about that? Do you feel like that's also part of your growth, or do you think that's the growth of the camp? Maybe a little bit of both?

speaker 1  4:18

I think it's both. Um, I was, I have less jitters about this year, and there are like, there's a lot more people here than there were the last two years, and it's really fun. I brought my younger sister with me.

DJ  4:34

No way! How's that going?

speaker 1  4:36

It's going really well. She's made friends, and she's having a good time so far. So, I'm really excited about that.

DJ  4:42

Is this her first year?

speaker 1  4:43

It's her first year. Yeah.

DJ  4:43

Wow. How old is she?

speaker 1  4:44

She's 12.

DJ  4:45

No way. Oh, that's great.

speaker 1  4:48

And I was-we were actually introduced to the camp by my cousin, who used to work at the day camp here.

DJ  4:54

Oh, no way.

speaker 1  4:55

And so her friends told her about the camp, and she's like, "Would you like to do this? Like, that'd be really fun."

DJ  5:00

Yeah.

speaker 1  5:00

So I'm really excited, and like, just honestly grateful I got to have this opportunity to come here, because it's beautiful here.

DJ  5:09

It is very beautiful, and honestly, like, you all the campers make this such a fun experience too. And I just think having someone like you who's been year over year, it's such a testament to the camp as well, like, right, it's not as though you came the first year and you're like, "Oh, this sucks, I'm never coming back." Like, you really are invested into it, it seems like. And you know, just observing you as well, you seem to really like you're always willing to answer questions. You really have showed yourself to be a leader as well, which I think is so important for younger campers and first timers to be able to really kind of like, not be afraid to experience the whole, the whole thing, you know? When you were in your first year, how were you shy? Were you... how did it feel when you had just started out here?

speaker 1  5:53

Um, it's okay. Let's see. I think, for-

DJ  5:56

How old were you?

speaker 1  5:57

I was 13, so I was a year older than my sister.

DJ  5:59

Okay.

speaker 1  6:00

Um, but I feel like I was a little hesitant at first, because it was my first time at like sleep away camp, um, but I was also really excited, because the year before I was going to go to a different camp, um, it was farther away, it was like near Big Bear, and it was for longer times, like for 10 days,

DJ  6:20

Oh wow.

speaker 1  6:21

But it was also a lot more expensive. But I wasn't able to go because I got COVID, so-

DJ  6:26

Sure.

speaker 1  6:26

It was really disappointing to be able to, like, not go, especially since, like, it was like leading up to that, and then, like, just the week before I, like, tested positive for COVID, and I couldn't go, because it was, like, I think it was the second year, or the, yeah, it was right coming out of like social distancing.

DJ  6:27

Yeah.

speaker 1  6:27

So we were, so I wasn't able to go.

DJ  6:30

Yeah, such a bummer.

speaker 1  6:31

Um, but I feel like I would really want to, even though next year will be my last year here, um, I think I would want to try and be a counselor here.

DJ  6:59

I was thinking that, I was wondering if you were interested in that.

speaker 1  7:02

I, in general, I would want to be counselor, because that would be really fun, just because kids are fun and, like, interesting, and I know a lot of people don't like kids, but I have a lot of younger cousins, and I was growing up with my younger sister, so.

DJ  7:18

Sure, yeah, you give, you give sort of like junior counselor vibes. Anyway, yeah, so let's talk a little bit about like what is home life like? You mentioned having a lot of cousins, I know you have a little sister. What is home like life for you? Home life like for you?

speaker 1  7:36

Both of my parents are very supportive. My mom helps, like I feel like my mom has.. I have more.. we talk about some stuff, or...let me rephrase that... the conversations I have with my mom and my dad are similar, just like I feel like both times are.. I don't know both my parents are very supportive, and like I'm close with both of them, and they support me and love me, and like I am also able to teach them different things, and yeah.

DJ  8:13

Like what's something that you've taught your parents about like your identity or the identity of your friends?

speaker 1  8:18

My mom has definitely known a little bit more about like I think that's what's trying to say earlier. My mom knows a little bit more about the queer community than my dad does, because my Dad grew up-dad grew up in it, like, a smaller town in, like, the valley, like Central Valley of California, but I like, for example, gender and sex don't equal the same thing, that's what we've talked about. And how, like, how, if you're trans, it just.. it doesn't have to be a specific thing, it just means that, like, there's no box here to fill out.

DJ  8:51

Yeah.

speaker 1  8:51

Here.. if you.. oh, I also.. I was talking this with my grandma as well, like, she didn't know what cis and trans meant, so I explained to her, she's like, "oh, cool, okay!"

DJ  9:01

Yeah.

speaker 1  9:02

So it-

DJ  9:02

Just kind of move on, it sounds like-in a good way.

speaker 1  9:04

In a good way, yeah. So I just explained what they, what it means, and then, like, okay, cool. So.

DJ  9:10

That's great, yeah. So you're able to have this conversation with your parents.

speaker 1  9:13

Yeah.

DJ  9:14

And then they're accepting, which is sounds really cool. So I guess I don't want to assume your identity, like, is that, do you identify?

speaker 1  9:21

Yeah, I'm non-binary, and actually this camp helped a lot with, like, finding out who I was. Like, I knew I was non-binary before camp, but I feel like I put myself into a box. Like, if I have to be non-binary, that means I have to be androgynous, so I can't like, or specifically more masculine, or certain more feminine. So I was like, I leaned more towards masculine because I thought I like, I should, but like this camp has like helped me seeing like gender identity doesn't like clothes, it just makes you feel comftorable. Clothes are a tool to help you feel comfortable in who you are, and I wore a dress for the first time again, more recently that was more comfortable in it, because I, it was just fun, because I went shopping with my friend, and we went to Macy's, we were just trying stuff on.

DJ  10:19

And it was fun for you?

speaker 1  10:20

Just fun.

DJ  10:20

That's really fun. I love that, actually.

speaker 1  10:21

Especially for her too, because, like, her parents are supporting, but not as much, so we got to go and just mess around in Macy's.

DJ  10:32

That sounds like a good day!

speaker 1  10:33

Yeah.

DJ  10:34

So talk about school a little bit. Are you, like, are you able to be out at school, and what is that experience like for you?

speaker 1  10:43

I'm really grateful that my school has a big queer community, and I have - there's a few teachers that are queer at my school, and they create safe spaces, and there's a lot of kids are out of my school. Also, we have a big theater production at our school, so yeah. And it's like there it creates a space for people to be themselves or just explore who they are, and also it's just it creates like a new window for opportunities, like hobbies, like if you want to try theater, or like the arts, we have a really good arts program at our school.

DJ  11:21

That's great.

speaker 1  11:22

Like, for theater, it doesn't just have to be like there's a bunch of stuff that goes into it, like you can do if you're interested in like arts, like physical art, like sewing, and like fashion, or like painting, like you could help paint sets, you could help with the costume department, or if you want to build sets, building sets is so much fun.

DJ  11:45

Yeah.

speaker 1  11:45

And also, if you want to work on your people skills, you can work in the lobby.

DJ  11:50

Oh, cool.

speaker 1  11:50

We have like a makeshift lobby for our theater, and it's just a fun time all around.

DJ  11:56

Like as ticket takers and ushers and stuff?

speaker 1  11:58

Ushers, ticket takers, and concessions.

DJ  12:01

Yeah.

speaker 1  12:01

That's what I did last year. I did, I took a break from theater because I did a lot of theater outside of school for one year.

DJ  12:07

Cool.

speaker 1  12:10

But yeah, it's fun, and I'm really glad because I know a lot of people don't have that at their schools.

DJ  12:16

Right.

speaker 1  12:17

And also, I, my school in general, it's pretty big, so we have, oh, actually the first year I was there they set up the program, or well, they set up a like gender-neutral bathroom thing.

DJ  12:30

Oh, wow.

speaker 1  12:31

Where they have like the teachers' bathrooms, like just single bathrooms.

DJ  12:33

Like a single stall.

speaker 1  12:34

Yeah, so they, they'll put like stickers, rainbow stickers on teachers' like doors, and you can go ask them for a key to the bathroom.

DJ  12:43

Oh, wow.

speaker 1  12:43

And you could get like a sticker for your ID, so you could go to the bathroom. I think we also have a like non-rainbow one, so if your parents don't know or like aren't as open to the idea of like their kids being trans, or like you know, we have one that's just, oh, it's just a sticker from school, and I think it helps like everyone feel more comfortable at school.

DJ  13:07

I love that.

speaker 1  13:07

Be who they are.

DJ  13:08

Yeah, it's like giving them an opportunity to be out in their own ways without any kind of identifiable, like stereotypical markers that would out them at a time they weren't ready to be out sounds like.

speaker 1  13:19

Yeah, actually one of the funny ones happened, or well, my Spanish teacher, he's like one of my favorite teachers. He was one of the people who had those stickers on his door, people kept like scratching it off. He got really upset and petty, just like, and then he told his, like, I think he told all of his classes, like, "I have this door, like, sticker on my door for people who come up to me and like, like to have an opportunity to be who they are and like be comfortable with themselves at school, so stop like quit scratching it off, and he like blew up the image and like made it like 10 times bigger and just like popped it on the like top of his door."

DJ  13:43

Oh heck yeah.

speaker 1  13:45

So it was really funny.

DJ  14:00

Wow, that's really great. I mean, that shows a lot of support and courage for that teacher as well. I mean, I can imagine being an adult in that space, especially when there's such a desire to want to, like, sometimes keep your inclusion and your allyship, and I don't know your teacher's identity, but, like, keep your allyship. Go ahead, yeah.

speaker 1  14:17

He's an ally. There we have, I think, we have just teachers I've met who are openly queer at my school are a math teacher and our theater teacher, but yeah, my spin teacher is an ally, and it, it's just been.. I'm so glad that he like shows that, and it shows up for us.

DJ  14:36

Yeah, I'm fighting along with you all. Yeah, what a very personal way that he gets to experience a little bit of the tiny, tiny sliver of what it's like to live in those identities, you know, yeah, yeah. Really great example. Thank you for sharing that. Okay, so let's talk a little bit more about camp. Like, how has it gone this trip? How are you enjoying it? What have you done that you've really liked? Talk about that this year.

speaker 1  14:58

There's a lot more activities I feel like this year? Axe-throwing has been one of my favorites.

DJ  15:03

How'd you do?

speaker 1  15:05

I did-I hit the board a few times, and then got like the out the middle.

DJ  15:10

Oh, nice, like the bullseye?

speaker 1  15:12

No, but someone got the bullseye the first try, and that was really fun.

DJ  15:15

That would not be me.

speaker 1  15:19

And I just, I like being back here, it's very fun. Well, last year was a little stressful, because there was like just friends, relationships were becoming difficult, but it worked out in the end.

DJ  15:31

That's good.

speaker 1  15:33

And yeah, this year I was a little nervous about that, but I'm doing pretty good, and even if you are having a hard time with the like just random bursts of anxiety, the sensory room is I love the sensory room, it is-

DJ  15:49

Yeah, describe that, I don't think anyone's talked about that yet.

speaker 1  15:51

It's just it's if you are feeling like any emotions, you can ask the counselor to go to a sensory room, which is it's the small room under, like, the first, I guess, first floor underneath the main hall, and it's just, it's quiet, there's like armchairs, there's books, there's like sour candies or gum, and there's like a sound machine, it's in like a bunch of like sensory tools to help with like if you are having a panic attack or anxiety attack, you can go there and talk to someone. I think we also have a registered therapist?

DJ  15:52

That's right. Yeah, we have a behavioral health, behavioral health person, and a mental health person to be able to help with kind of all those varying needs.

speaker 1  15:52

Yeah, it's it's very nice in there, and I'm actually so glad they have it, because being home, being away from home is stressful. I used it my first year, and I used it this year, and it's just a tool to help and like make everything more comfortable for everybody-everybody involved.

DJ  15:55

That's great. And what I like about you naming that is, it also reminds me that we're trying to offer that safe and brave space for lots of different kinds of folks, too right? We're really trying to attend to neurodivergence, emotional needs, that kind of thing, and you've really done a good job naming how you've leveraged those tools as well. So, we'd love to talk a little bit about the adults, like, how have the, how has it gone for you, especially over the last three years with your relationships with the counselors and volunteers?

speaker 1  17:28

Everyone here is so nice, and my counselors are really fun, and this year, especially, our group is very chaotic, and we joke about a lot of stuff, but we also are able to just like to be ourselves and create like a song community, and yeah, it's so much fun, especially last year a lot of counselors helped me get through like the friendship because I'm I'm not friends with that person anymore.

DJ  18:01

Okay.

speaker 1  18:03

But it was..it could have gone worse, but the.. the counselors definitely helped me with that and helped me get through things.

DJ  18:14

I love that it sounds like you may-and you don't feel like you have to divulge, but it just sounds like you maybe had a rough time. You retreated into the adult supports, and you were able to, in you know, in your words, it could have been worse then it wasn't, because of the resources that you use to help you. Well, that's a testament to you. I just want to say, like, that might not have been a way that other campers would have handled that, so that also take that as a point of pride for yourself too, because that could have, like, you said, it could have gone in a lot of different ways, and you should have some credit for how you handle that as well.

speaker 1  18:47

Yeah, um, yeah, this year I feel like it's going on better than I think it's also, is there's more, like I said earlier, it's more just things to do, and like more opportunities, because this is the third year camp here, and we're able to explore more things, and because I think the first year we were just like figuring things out, and now there's a lot more people here, and the word about us just about now.

DJ  19:16

That's right, yeah. Can I hear a little bit about like being 13 is kind of young, you know, and now you're 16, I assume? Yeah, so talk about like how that is. How did it feel when you were 13? I mean, did that feel now that you're 16 and you're few years older? Can you look back and remember, like, wow, that was very brave of me, or like I was very scared when I first showed up, something like that?

speaker 1  19:39

Yeah, I was kind of nervous that I didn't bring like a plushie, because I'm like, oh, people, I don't know how people are gonna react to that, or like I was just very reserved I think. I did some of the costumes, but I just didn't really go all out, because I didn't know the types of people would be here and. And I was surprised, I was like very surprised, in a good way, that everyone's so welcoming, and you can laugh and just joke around, and everyone's welcome here, and I think, let's see, the first year I was here, like, so that was my first time away from my home, like, like, without family, and it was nerve-wracking. The first night was a bit rough. I forgot, shut the blinds off, like, turn, put the blinds down, and I woke up with sun. It was, it was the beautiful, the view was beautiful. The birds were really pretty, but I only got a few hours to sleep, so.

DJ  20:42

Oh no.

speaker 1  20:45

But the first day, the first night was a little nerve-wracking, because people, I just didn't know a lot of people, everyone did, I don't think anybody knew each other, except for a pair of siblings.

DJ  20:57

Oh, okay.

speaker 1  20:58

But it was also, it was amazing, like seeing people, like queer people from different generations. Just because I get really excited, I also got really excited when I met one of my cousins, who was queer for the first time, and I still do get excited when I meet more people who are queer from every generation, and like, there are more of us, and also, like, you know?

DJ  21:23

Oh, that's great. I was gonna ask you about that, like, some of the intention, as you know, is to have lots of different age groups represented through the volunteers, and then the counselors, and then the staffers, or excuse me, the campers. So, like, how has that gone? Where you've been with.. and I really love this idea of being excited meeting other queer people. I really relate to that. And so, thinking about, like, yeah, there are people who are here and queer and in their 50s, 60s, 70s now. How does that feel, knowing that there are elders kind of around and here to help you? Is that anything you've thought about, or have even talked to people about that?

speaker 1  22:13

Yeah, I like, I think that just, I guess, as times change, people change, but because there is a big thing about, oh, I came out to my grandparents, and they have an old mindset, so they didn't accept me, so I think that is, I think that breaks the stigma of like, like, older generation don't like it, was never a thing, even though it was a thing, like being queer isn't something new, it's like been shown throughout history, especially through Greek history, and it's just really cool to see and meet other people who live through experience, especially because like queer rights has been in like for time it's been very recent, for like, like the right to marry, it's, it's like within my lifetime, and I'm like still really young, and like, we, like, as a community, we've come a long way in such a short amount of time.

DJ  23:18

Yeah.

speaker 1  23:18

And it's just so cool to meet people who've gone through that journey and fought with the rest of us and everyone here just to be who we are.

DJ  23:28

I love that. I agree with that. You know, I'm, I'm 40, I'm 41 and I think about that too, right? Even having the elders who are here today, like some of our volunteers, I really look up to them as well, because they paved the way for me and for our, my generation too, to have some of the rights that we have, and hopefully my generation is paving the rights for you all, and your generation will pave the rights for those to come after us, because as we talk about here at camp, as well, like there will always be evolving social justice issues, and we always will need people who understand that to be kind of like working on those issues, so I really appreciate hearing you say that. It's a good reminder for me as well. Okay, so I have been asking everyone two questions, and we'll wrap with these two questions. Number one, what brings you joy? It can be camp, it can be something at home. We haven't really talked about this, but you're also very artistic. So, what is something that brings you joy?

speaker 1  24:23

I think a lot of things, being around my friends and people I care about, and also art and music. I like to sing a lot, and I music helps me so much, but like it's like helped me throughout a lot of my life, and it changes as I change, and that's like just one thing I love about it. And also, like I said, art, I've gotten better at watercoloring, and it's just, it's just so fun. I love watercoloring, like watercolor and water paint because either you could just sit and relax and just paint what you see, or you can have an image of mine and like paint specifically something. Oh, last year actually I began to learn like how to crochet, and that has been really fun, because I have been able to make plushies, and I'm making myself a bag right now.

DJ  25:21

Oh, awesome.

speaker 1  25:22

And I'm also able to get money from that because I sell some of my things at school, and-

DJ  25:28

Oh my gosh, thats really great.

speaker 1  25:31

And I also get to one of my friends bought me a pattern to use because she wanted to have it. I'm like, "okay, if you want to buy it", she's like, yeah, I'll buy it for you. I'm like, "oh, thank you". It was a little.. Do you know what a sea bunny is?

DJ  25:47

Yeah!

speaker 1  25:47

She bought me that pattern, and it's been like a lot of people want them, so I'm like, "Okay, cool,"

Nice small business.

speaker 1  25:54

Yeah, my teacher bought one for me, and I think it's the class pet.

DJ  25:59

That's very cute. I love that.

speaker 1  26:01

Yeah, so crocheting and like just listening to music or watching movies has like really just brought me joy, and also like the people around, like my family, my friends, and like people I've connected with, like Jody, brings joy.

DJ  26:15

I love that. And you've seemed like a very joyful person, so it does not surprise me that you have so many things that bring you joy. Okay. Last question. When you look back at this week, especially your third, your third time being here, what is something you hope that you will have gotten out of your time here at kin•dom camp?

speaker 1  26:34

Connecting with more people.

DJ  26:37

Listeners, the mic just dropped, but we're good. Technical difficulty, we're here, though.

speaker 1  26:42

Connecting with people is so much fun, especially people in my age group. I think this year we.. it's a little.. this is what else is a little different? It's because also there's more people here, like more campers. We've like changed it to.. or like the camp has changed it to where we're separated into, I think, four groups, and it's separated by age, so like 12 to 13, like 14 through 15, then like 16-17, So I think I've got it's like open more doors to like connect with more people my age, like specifically 16 and 17 year olds, and just like have fun and mess around and just like talking about just because I think it's like peers like because everyone here is like we're all students and like campers but it's it's fun to connect with you like specifically like around your age group but also I get to if like we all do activities together, not just in our small groups. So it's also fun to see it's, it's amazing to see my sister make friends, and one of my other friends, who are known for like the whole three years, they're making friends as well, because they usually just hang out with myself and my other friends from last few years, and it's just so fun to see them make friends and like connect with other people and blossom, we played, oh, I played D&D with a lot of the people in my age group and my sister, because that's just how it worked out, it was so fun. I think it also pushed me to do, we have also have a D&D group, like at my school, so I think I'm, I'm going to join that as well.

DJ  28:26

That's a really great connection through camp and your school life and your home life. So, I think we'll end it there. Thank you so much, Goose, for your time. Really appreciate you, and it's really fun to just watch you, and to even in the two years I've seen you watch you blossom, to your point. I think that's really sweet.

speaker 1  28:42

Thank you so much. This is really fun.

Hi y'all, it's Baylee. I'm the Creative Director of kin•dom community. I’d like to talk a little bit more about kin•dom camp and how you can get involved. kin•dom camp is an opportunity for LGBTQIA+ youth ages 12 to 17 to feel safe and free to show up as their full selves. Campers will have the chance to experience traditional camp activities and recreation, plus some specialized programming to incorporate LGBTQIA+ history and culture. More information can be found on our website kindomcommunity.org/camp. If you have any questions you can't find the answers to, you can email us at kindomcamp@gmail.com. Thanks for listening to kin•dom campfire chats. We are proud to be a safe space for these campers, and we are even more proud of them for sharing their stories. We hope you'll keep gathering around the campfire with us as we celebrate all of the stories that make us this kin•dom community.
